1. Alphonso (Hapus) – The King of Mangoes

Considered the “King of Mangoes,” Alphonso (or Hapus) is known for its rich taste, smooth texture, and saffron-colored pulp. Grown mainly in Maharashtra, this mango is a favorite for its perfect balance of sweetness and aroma. It was named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese general who helped introduce grafting techniques to India in the 16th century, leading to superior mango cultivation.

2. Kesar – The Saffron Mango

Known for its bright orange flesh and sweet, aromatic flavor, Kesar mangoes are primarily grown in Gujarat. They have a sweet taste with a hint of tanginess, making them perfect for desserts, milkshakes, and ice creams. The name “Kesar,” meaning saffron in Hindi, was given due to the fruit’s vibrant color.

A popular North Indian mango with a sweet, juicy taste and fiberless texture. The name “Langra,” meaning “lame” in Hindi, is believed to have come from a farmer who cultivated the variety despite being physically impaired.

5. Banganapalle (Safeda) – The Southern Favourite

Large-sized, sweet, and fiberless, Banganapalle mangoes, also known as Safeda, are grown in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. They have a firm texture, making them a great choice for slicing and eating fresh. This variety has been cultivated since the 16th century and was historically favored by the Nawabs of Hyderabad.

6. Totapuri – The Tangy Treat

Recognizable by its parrot-beak shape, Totapuri mangoes have a slightly tangy taste with a firm texture. They are widely used for making juices, pickles, and processed mango products.
